What Happens to All the Flood Water?

Did you know that most all rain water ends up in the ocean? Any pollutants in that rain water will have an impact on the ocean’s ecosystem, affecting all fish, marine wildlife, plants and more. It’s a delicate balance that must not only be maintained, but also carefully preserved.

That’s where you come in. If your company is concerned about the environment, you’ll need to have your drainage systems properly maintained and kept clean.

What To Know about Drainage Systems

Drainage systems include pipelines, dams, channels, retention systems and more. A storm drainage system, known as a catch basin, comes in different forms. They’re so commonplace in our modern world, you might not even notice them—under the curb where the sidewalk meets the road, as part of the abutment alongside a concrete highway border. . .

Catch basins come in all sizes, are made from many different materials, and are typically found in two forms—drop inlets and curb opening catch basins.

The drop inlet type is found in low spots—the curbs mentioned earlier and in parking lots. They often have a steel frame with a grate on top. Curb opening catch basins are poured into place with concrete and a manhole cover that allows maintenance crews to get inside. They feature protection bars in front of the opening as a safety measure, so a child or small animal won’t fall in or get stuck.

What Would Happen if There Were No Catch Basins?

In ancient times, people made irrigation canals with catch basins so there would be water left over for crops. Today, our landscape is much different, with asphalt streets, concrete buildings, and pavement everywhere. As a result, when it rains, the water has no place to go. Without catch basins and drainage systems, we would be buried under water.

What Happens if You Don’t Keep Catch Basins Clean?

If you don’t keep the catch basin clean, dirt, debris, pollutants, and other unwanted materials will either collect and cause a major blockage or deliver pollution out to the ocean.

In order to do our part in protecting the planet, we have to have a system of drainage maintenance. You and your business play a major role in protecting the environment when you have regularly scheduled maintenance of your catch basins, stormceptors, and other drainage devices.
